Abstract: Since the late 1990s, the global music industry had been plagued by rampant piracy. By 2001, with 40% of all music sold being pirated, piracy was rapidly turning into a major threat to the industry's survival. The industry fought back with a slew of lawsuits and co-ordinated raids to close down several websites providing free downloads along with scores of illegal CD manufacturing units across the world. Still piracy continued unabated. During these tumultuous times, Apple Computers came up with its iTunes Music Store, which promised to change the fortunes of the beleaguered industry. But, iTunes also had its limitations and was up against serious competition. |
